Bonsai Series

“Bonsai Series” is a series of bonsai drawings using pigment ink to make multiple tiny hairline strokes to build on the details, capturing the intricate forms, aged textures and expressive gestures that emerge through years of careful shaping and cultivation by the bonsai masters. Each bonsai is a collaboration between the human and the plant, embodying a silent conversation of guidance and adaptation. The twisted trunks, exposed roots and dense foliage speak volumes of resilience and refinement, demonstrating both the plant’s journey and as well as the cultivator’s passion and vision.

The gold pot in my work symbolises the preciousness of this cultivation process - not materially, but spiritually and philosophically. It is about the deep respect for time, labour and life itself. Just as gold is refined through fire, the art of bonsai is shaped by patience, perseverance, and care.

By using this laborious manner of working, I want to honour the bonsai masters’ patience, time, discipline, labour and devotion to the profound knowledge of nature. Through these works, I wish to draw attention to the symbiotic relationship between humans and plants, and to pay tribute to the bonsai masters who dedicate themselves to this craft, shaping nature while being shaped by it in return.
